How to fast?
It’s not about a rule you can’t break. It’s about a relationship you can’t live without. Use your natural rhythm to fast.
Morning: Begin with praise & worship. Read God’s Word.
Noon: God’s Word. So a prayer walk. Journal & invite the Holy Spirit to speak to you.
Evening: Get alone with God. Spend time in intercessory prayer.
Some types of Fasts:
What Is the Daniel Fast? Abstained from meat, bread, wine for 21 days (Daniel 10:3; Daniel 9:3).
What Is a Partial Fast? Eating veggies, fruit, & water for a length of time. (Es 4:16; Joel 2:12; Ezra 8:21-23; Jonah 3:5-9).
What Is a Liquid Fast? All food is replaced with liquids. Drink plenty of water.
What Is a 40-Day Fast? No food or water for a certain length of time. Jesus and Moses both did this. (Ex 34:28; Mt 4:2).
What Is a Fast from Sex? 1 Co 7:5. A mutually agreed focus to connect to God on your own or together.
What Is a Fast from Social Media, TV, Spending? The enemy’s greatest tactic—get us to turn to anything except Jesus. Remove whatever that is for you.
Psalm 139: 23-24 Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the everlasting way.
REMEMBER: This is NOT about attention, it’s all about devotion!
Surrender is the key here. Fasting gently reveals what we rely on, what we fear, and what we cling to. We need to turn over our desire and plans to Him. We need to allow the Holy Spirit to work in and through us.
What do I need to surrender before beginning this fast?
Are there areas where I resist God’s leading?
Am I willing to be changed—not just blessed?
